At this holiday time, as the new year beckons, I figured it might be nice to add a quick post about one of my favorite, easy ways to give. It’s a site called Free Rice. (This link goes to an English spelling quiz, just one of the available categories. More on that later.)
While it’s not a glamorous site and has been around for many years, it’s still a simple, fun way to give a little gift of food … playing every day if you want. For each question you answer right, the site gives the cash equivalent of 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Programme.
According to the World Food Programme site, they are “the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience.” Not a bad thing as we remember those individuals and families all around the world who need help and a chance to live with dignity.
How does FreeRice.com work?
Basically it’s a quiz game where you get to answer multiple-choice questions at varying degrees of difficulty. And it’s not just spelling. You can choose your categories or levels of play … and even form groups to make your charitable clicking even more fun.
If you go to the Free Rice, you’ll see a small set of horizontal bars in the upper left corner. That’s where you can choose your levels and categories. And the more you play, the more you donate. It’s that simple.
Could be a nice lunchtime habit to click in and, in a way, share your lunch with those who need a little help. And it’s even the largest provider of school meals, a thought that goes well with lunch. Or just a nice way to take a work break that’s good for you as well as those you’re helping to feed.
More about the World Food Programme
Again, from their website: “The World Food Programme (WFP) is the food-assistance branch of the United Nations … In addition to emergency food relief, WFP offers technical assistance and development aid, such as building capacity for emergency … response, managing supply chains and logistics, promoting social safety programs, and strengthening resilience against climate change.”
In 2020, the WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 for “its efforts to provide food assistance in areas of conflict, and to prevent the use of food as a weapon of war and conflict.” Not a bad place to help at all. And since 2010, Freerice “has raised more than 210 billion grains of rice for people in need.”
So go ahead and give FreeRice a try … you can even learn some new things along the way. But I warn you … it can be addictive — both the play and the giving, I’ve found. 🙂
